Captian's Log,
The Horzion is empty and I wonder why?; most of the Crew have been reassigned and our First Officer is on assignment. But this mission of Starfleet testing experimental technology has me concerned

John exits the Ready Room for the Bridge and looks around taking a breath.

"Are we Ready for the tests?" asked John

[Bridge]

Charlotte looked up from her console when she heard the soft swoosh of the ready room doors and smiled as her husband walked out. However at his question regarding their readiness for the upcoming tests, she knew that there would be none of their familiarity and joviality understanding how serious this was especially with most the crew being reassigned.

" Science is ready Captain, all upgrades have been added and everything shows green" she replied as her console flashed in confirmation.

Commander Shepard was on board a galaxy class star ship returning from training cadets at starfleet acedemy on earth about first contact procedures. He was in the captain's ready room and they was making small talk. Josh was thinking about his former command on the Atlantis that was scrapped due to contamination and cost him his big chair. Even though it saved lives when a captain loses a ship it's always grounds for a investigation and the outcome was something he was expecting but he wished it had gone the other way. Captain Sara Burton was about to start talking about the incident when she received a call from the bridge. =^="Captain we're about to drop out of warp and enter the system where the Horizon is." Captain Burton announced. "Thank you commander."=^= The captain closed the channel and looked over at Josh. "Well looks like you're almost home. You can always stay if you want. "Captain I'm homered but you already have a good first officer and with you set to retire next year I'm sure he would make a good captain. The Horizon is my home and I've been gone way too long."

Captain Burton smiled and stood up. "Well then commander let's get you home." Josh stood up as well and they walked out onto the bridge. The captain sat in the captain's chair with her first officer on the right and Josh on the left. "Open a channel." The channel opened with the sound of familiar tones. "USS Horizon this is Captain Sara Burton of the star ship Victory. We found one of your kids wandering around in our yard and was wondering if you keep an eye on him." She finished and looked at Josh and smiled. Josh smiled back and laughed. They waited for a response.

John exits the Ready Room for the Bridge and looks around taking a breath.

"Are we Ready for the tests?" asked John

[Bridge]

John was sitting in the center chair when the captain entered the Bridge. John had been in command while the new core was being installed and everything was looking good. "Captain the new core as been installed and the old core is safely packed away in the main Cargo Bay, should  we need it." he said as he got up and headed to his main station.

As he made it to his station the Horizon was hailed by the Victory.

John then walked forward he sighed he knew the First Officer is not going to like what will be happening.

Josh stood up and looked at the captain. "Permission to disembark ma'am." Captain Burton stood up and extended her hand. Josh immediately shook her hand. "Granted Commander. Be safe out there." Josh nodded his head. "You too Captain." Josh then walked towards the turbolift. "Transporter Room 3." Josh waited a few moments till the turbolift stopped. He stepped out of the turbolift and after a few moments of walking he arrived at the transporter room. He smiled at the transporter chief and stepped on the pad. "Energize"

==Transporter Room USS Horizon==

Seconds later Josh materialized on the Horizon. He was greeted by their chief. "Welcome back Commander." The Ensign said. "Thank you Ensign please have my things brought to my quarters." The Ensign summoned two crewmen over as Josh was walking out of the transporter room. Josh couldn't hear him give them their orders as the door shut behind him. He reached the turbolift. "Bridge"

==Horizon Bridge==

The turbolift stopped and the doors opened. He saw the familiar faces of his friends and people he considers his family. He walked towards the Captain who was sitting in his chair. "Captain permission to come on board." Josh waited for the approval.

Josh gave a puzzling look. "Tests? What kind of tests captain?" Josh said nervously. He didn't like the fact the the Horizon is usually used for testing new equipment instead of actual test ships like they are supposed to.

The computer simulation was run and finished, the results were on the screen before the Chief Engineer.  The simulation shows a breakdown of all systems being used.   As the results of the test, over half of the systems on the ship would now be non-functional.

KnodwI got his team together started working on a new routine to keep the major systems working if all hell broke loose.

Lt. McLamore, take over..  I am going to see the Captain...

The Chief left the engine room

Josh sighed. "As much as i would like to explore this option of travel cause it could benefit the federation, but the Borg has had centuries to prepare their ships. I'm sure they lost several ships with countless drones on board. They don't value their people as well do. We have families on here. One microcrack in the hull and we'll hardly have to to announce we have a problem before the ship breaks apart." Josh sighed and calmed himself. "Can we at least make arrangements with either a star base, colony, or even another ship to evacuate the familes of the crew. With all due respect sir we as members of starfleet signed up for certain risks, They didn't."

I am going to be honest Captain..   Who ever it was in Starfleet wanted to do a Transwarp test with my engine room was an Idiot.  OK, test simulation run, It does not look good even on paper.  One, most of our weapons will be down even if they work it will be at 20%, Two, Multi-Vector Assault mode is non operational.  Three, Life support will be dropped by 50%.  You want my recommendation, take out the pile of engineered junk out of my engine room.

Then he hands over the padd with all tech data available.

So in Starfleet's eyes the forth time is a charm..    Did the morons at Starfleet R&D also say that you have to be able to open a transwarp conduit, It was done by a sub space generator place on the Navagational deflector.   Most of these R&D types have never seen a starship or else any type of space travel....

He paused just for a moment..

Here is how it is going to happen Sir.   When you say the word, I will engage the engine, then we will take off.   Then something is going to happen, then we will be stuck either 100's or even 1000's of light years from home, with no help..   Stuck somewhere, if not worse than Voyager.

Plus I will be to blame that we can not get our engines and weapons back online fast enough.    I think I have hit all of my points.   I know make it work.   I still can not authorize this testing on this vessel with a clear mind.    If you think I should be relieved of duty, then Sir do so.  I know my engines, the Transwarp will not work with our systems.   The data proves my point.

Then he moved out of the way to his right.

Josh thought what his brother said. It was basically the same thing Josh said moments ago. "Sir I'm all for bringing Voyager home quicker but starfleet needs to be realistic. That is borg technology. Unless we have a crew member that is part of the collective or capture one which would go against everything the Federation stands for i don't see this ending the way they want. However captain we will follow your orders and if my brother chooses not to proceed with the tests then i will assign this assignment to his assistant. I would reccomend though that more simulations be run on the holodeck before we begin any live test. Just to cover all bases."

Charlotte smiled as Josh reappeared on the Bridge before returning her attention to her console as her department continued to update information and prepare for the upcoming tests with their newly acquired technology. Of course it wasn't difficult to overhear the conversation going on behind her as the Captain, XO and Chief Engineer discussed the situation and gave their opinions for and against what they had been ordered to do.

In all honesty the thought of using the Borg Technology did scare her as there was plenty of unknowns but had faith in both her husband and the crew that they would get through it. For now she ran more detailed scans and continued preparations.

You want my thoughts and suggestions..   Then here it is.  If they want to get readings for those transwarp conduits.  Get it from Voyager..   It is not feasible to tactically lose a ship for a bloody test, especially with a skeleton crew aboard.

We are a battleship, yes...   We can going into any fire fight and come out bruised and battered and still come home..  Now send us to an area, that we have no allies, then get into a fire fight...   Battered, bruised and lots of useless deaths, then when we do return how ever long it takes.   Who is going to get the ax, probably two if they are alive to tell the tale.

He paused for one more moment.

Let me show you what is going to happen.

Computer run simulation Kang 1 through Kang 3 on main viewscreeen.

The computer ran the test simulation showing the three main failures of the tests.   First one was a warp core containment breach, second Borg Assimilation and third Lost in some unknown quadrant.

Josh thought for a moment. "What if we can get more engineers to assist you. Bring in some of their desingers and have a meeting of the minds. Maybe if they see it won't work or the dangers involved they could either scrap the idea or use an actual test ship."

John stood at his console and listened to the exchange between the captain, XO, and the Chief Engineer as they spoke about the risks of the transwarp engine. He did not like the fact that they would lose their defenses, so he began to run simulations of his own. He figured that since the ship itself would not have adequate weapons that they could have security officers and pilots standing by to to use the ships shuttles for protection till full power was restored.

The results of the simulations proved his theory and he decided he would suggest it after the current conversation finished.

"Let me put it this way my brother and commander.  Where were they when this ship was being designed?  Where were they when I was one of just four engineers to design this dual warp core?  Where were they when the warp pulse cannon was designed and tested?  No one can answer that cause they had a pencil shoved up where the hell ever.

You bring one of them into my engine room they will hang in the warp nacelle!"

KnodwI was at the end of his rope.  Not knowing what else to do to keep this test from happening.

Captain, I may have an idea for that......  Get a long range shuttle equip the transwarp core to it, have our finest science officer to set up a probe setting in the shuttle to have it relay it back to the ship in real time....   If something was to happen then the shuttle will do an automatic log bouy back to the ship.    Kill two birds with one junk core.

The idea brought a gleam to the engineer's eyes.

It wasn't difficult not to hear the continued conversation between the Captain, XO and Chief Engineer as they discusses the transwarp technology and how they could get the data they needed without endangering the ship. At the mention of a probe and using a shuttle, she turned in her chair.

" If I may Captain, I can easily set up the probe setting in the Shuttle once its modified with the transwarp core and have it relay all information back to Horizon, although I assume that the shuttle will need a pilot and for me to join them in order for this to be a success".

Josh contemplated all the suggestions. "Our main concern is the ship and crew. To minimize things we should try the probe, then shuttle second. Then and only then try it with the Horizon but after several simulations from the data recieved. When the time comes for the shuttle test I'll volunteer to pilot it."

Charlotte understood Bridge decorum but had mainly wanted to offer her opinion . However realised that she should of waited and wasn't eavesdropping as it wasn't difficult not to hear what was being said.

She was also aware that it was a one way trip and was simply offering a solution to make this test a success. Despite her husband's tone and words as if she didn't matter, Charlotte replied.

" My apologies Captain it wasn't my intention and I understand completely, Science will be ready for whatever you decide".

With that she turned back to her console and returned to work.

The chief engineer smiles.

"Aye, the will work perfectly.  Even if the shuttle makes the voyage, we sbould be able to get telemetry..  If something goes wrong, the shuttle may not make it back."

He paused for moment.

"I will head down to the shuttle bay and prep a shuttle.  With your permission sir."

John looked across the Bridge he had a lot on his mind they only had 40 on board with 30 of them Engineers so if they were attacked he would be at a disadvantage.

john nodded and began to seal off the unused decks, when he had finished he prepared the shields and weapons for combat. He made sure that all torpedoes were loaded and that the phasers and shields had all the power they could handle. He then looked at the captain. "Sir tactical stands ready for combat." he said.

As the others continued making plans regarding the use of the transwarp core and how best to utilise it given the dangers they now faced, Charlotte had returned to scanning the area. Focusing on the latest information streaming in as the order was made to raise shields and prepare weapons.

Waiting for the moment to speak as she became concerned regarding what she was seeing. " Captain, sensors are picking up abnormal radiation coming from a Nebula .8 lightyears from our current location".

When her husband looked at her before walking over to her station, she remained professional yet on the inside was happy that he was close. Watching as he then inputted some commands into her console and when he spoke about them not being able to use shields or sensors and that there could be an entire fleet waiting for them but they wouldn't know anything until it was too late only further proved the seriousness of the situation.

At the order of sending a class three probe and to gather as much information as possible before it was consumed by the nebula, Charlotte immediately got to work before looking back at her husband.

" Aye Captain and sending the probe now " she replied receiving confirmation that it had launched and would monitor both its trajectory and the data it would send back.

Josh looked to Harriman. "Post extra security around key access areas. Engineering, bridge, computer core, transporter rooms, hanger bay and main cargo bay. If we encounter the Borg they'll most likely beam on board and try to take the ship a piece at a time. Posting them will at least give us more of a fighting chance."

Josh thought for a moment. "The Romulans, Breen even the Dominion. I know we have a treaty with them but for some of them if they feel like it would give them an advantage over the Federation they would abandon it."

[Main Shuttlebay]

The Chief Engineer was busy working on a long range warp shuttle to prepare for testing of the trans-warp engine.   He had five of his best engineers on the job.

Ok guys, I want to setup a good test.  Program the computer to head out to a specific destination, have the sensors track everything while in Trans-warp.   If no, malfunction return to ship.   If there is a malfunction, transmit log bouy back to ship.  Also setup a self-destruct.

Now he had to report to the captain..   He left the shuttlebay, returning to the bridge.

Before John could respond to the XO's command and remind him about the lack of crew, the captain spoke up and told him. But even if they could not post real security officers John decided to see if it was possible to rig modified phasers to fire at will if Borg came in contact with their location. He was not a engineer by trade but his mother had been and she had taught him the basics so after he ran the numbers he knew he should run it by the captain and see what he thought.

"Captain I have a security idea I would like to run by you." he said

"Since we are short handed on security, we could rig phasers with proximity sensors and set them to a modulating fire sequence. It would help protect areas we can not." he said.

The Chief Engineer arrived on the bridge after his team completed the conversion of the shuttle.

Then he noticed another discussion being held.  So he waited at his terminal on the bridge.   Double checking the simulation runs.

Charlotte had continued to monitor the probe's progress, looking for anything that might give them more answers especially after what had been initially detected. But of course it became slightly frustrating when the probe naturally imploded due to the nebula although at least could tell the Captain something.

So when he then asked for an update, she looked up at her husband and replied to him.

" Before it imploded, I did detect tachyon emissions beyond the normal levels for this class of Nebula but was unable to get any further information".

After making her report, Charlotte had returned her attention to the sensors, knowing that there wasn't a lot she could do in terms of the probe as it had been disintegrated but that wouldn't stop her from continuing to scan the nebula. The conversation behind her continued regarding their next steps and what or who could be hiding from them and all she could do was wait for the scan results from Harriman and what her next orders would be.

Of course it was terrifying in a way especially if the Borg where involved but had faith in the Captain and the remaining crew that answers would be found and then get the hell out of here.

John watched the sensors closely and there was a small ping, he looked at the ping again. He then began to to scan the readings for signs of Borg tech, but instead he noticed the area had a Romulan signature.

"Captain, I am detecting Romulan ships in the Nebula." he said as he looked at the console then to the captain.
